Student Builds Dazzling Minecraft Tech Tower

Twelve hours of work results in a digital marvel

It was a true labor of love.

Georgia Tech student Kalen Patton used his Minecraft prowess to make this picture-perfect replica of one of the Institute’s most beloved buildings.

Patton, a mathematics and computer science major from Johns Creek, Georgia, says he was a little homesick after realizing he wouldn’t be seeing Tech Tower in person for the rest of the semester.

“Tech Tower was the first thing that came to mind since it is the most iconic building on campus,” Patton explains.

He planned the build in single-player mode using pictures and angles of Tech Tower he found on Google Earth. He then used the Georgia Tech Minecraft Realms server to source the materials he needed to make his masterpiece.

“It took around 2,500 brick blocks and around 12 hours of work spread over the course of a week,” Patton says.

He adds that it was a great way to practice good social distancing during Spring Break. There was just one problem, though — the ’T’ on the Tower would routinely get swiped.
