Hidden Georgia Tech: Student Media

By Victor Rogers NOV. 21, 2016

Across the Georgia Tech campus, hidden spaces and forgotten places await rediscovery. Some are relics of an earlier time, difficult to find and explore. Others are very much in view, but often overlooked. Hidden Georgia Tech is a photo essay series highlighting places on campus that are hidden in plain sight.

STUDENT MEDIA

Georgia Tech’s robust student media operation includes a newspaper (The Technique), yearbook (The Blueprint), art and literary magazine (Erato), undergraduate research journal (The Tower), open-forum magazine (The North Avenue Review), traditions and history handbook for new students (T-Book), non-commercial radio station (WREK 91.1 FM), and the Georgia Tech Cable Network (GTCN). Students working in these outlets gain hands-on experience in news gathering and dissemination, advertising, television production, management, and other areas of media operations.

Members of the Tech campus and the Atlanta community see and hear the output of these operations every day, but few people see where the work takes place. The Office of Student Media, home to all of the operations except GTCN, is located in the Smithgall Student Services Building. GTCN, which is part of the Office of Housing, has a studio in the Freeman Residence Hall and technology support in the Rich Building.
