Make-Up Classes Not Required Following ‘SnowJam’ Closures
The two-and-a-half day campus closure at the end of January caused numerous activities to be canceled or rescheduled, including classes.
In response to the weather-related closure, the vice provosts for undergraduate and graduate education have jointly requested that faculty exercise some latitude with respect to assignment deadlines.
Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Colin Potts and Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Affairs Susan Cozzens cited University System of Georgia policies, reminding faculty that mandatory make-up classes are determined by the registrar, and that students are not required to attend any ad hoc make-up classes. Because Tech’s current semesters are in excess of the System’s requirements, they said, mandatory make-up classes will only be considered if additional campus closures are necessary.
“We are fortunate that we are sufficiently early in the semester that with slight reorganization most course syllabi could absorb short delays,” they wrote, adding, “a little flexibility will go a long way.”
In addition to class cancelations, the annual Internship and Co-Op Fair was shortened by a day. The second day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Student Center Ballroom.
The Jan. 28 Stamps Health Services Flu Clinic was also cut short, but will not be rescheduled. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to make appointments with the immunization clinic to receive flu shots. The vaccination is free for students who have paid their health fee and $25 for those who have not, as well as faculty and staff.
