Sports Continue Into the Summer
Yellow Jackets huddle before a game.
While spring classes may be over, some spring sports are gearing up for their end-of-season tournaments. Five Georgia Tech teams are still playing, many of them having already finished their ACC tournaments and preparing to move on to their respective NCAA tournaments.
Whether you’re in the stadium or following along at home, there are plenty of Yellow Jacket teams to root for as spring turns to summer.
Men’s Golf: NCAA Pullman Regional
May 13–15
Pullman, Washington
After coming off of a record-breaking ACC tournament win, the men’s golf team heads to the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in the hopes of getting closer to capturing the NCAA title as well. They are the No. 2 seed in the region after finishing the year ranked No. 8 in the country. Once the regional round concludes on Wednesday, the Jackets will find out if they’ve qualified for the NCAA Championship, a feat they’ve missed by just one stroke for the past two years. This will be their 22nd NCAA regional appearance in a row and their 29th in the 31 years since the regional qualifiers were established.
Baseball: Final Regular Season Games
May 14, 16–18
Russ Chandler Stadium, Atlanta
The Yellow Jackets are set to end their stellar season with a four-game homestand. Currently ranked sixth in the country, the baseball team has four games left before the ACC tournament starts on May 21. They play Mercer on May 14, followed by a three-game series with the University of Pittsburgh beginning on Thursday, May 16. Admission to baseball games is free with a valid BuzzCard.
Men’s Tennis: NCAA Singles Championship
May 20–25
Orlando, Florida
Junior Carlos Divar has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships as one of 64 players selected to compete in the singles tournament. At-large bids are given to those who don’t win their conference championship but are chosen by the selection committee to compete. As of May 1, Divar is ranked 27th in the country and will play single-elimination matches with best-of-three sets throughout the tournament.
Track and Field: NCAA East Preliminary Round
May 23–25
Jacksonville, Florida
Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams will soon be heading to Jacksonville to try and earn a spot in the NCAA Championships. At last week’s ACC Championships, Bria Matthews and Jeanine Williams of the women’s team broke school records in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. On the men’s side, Avery Bartlett earned first-team All-ACC honors for the 800-meter event, while Daniel Pietsch and Ben Jean finished second-team All-ACC in the 400-meter event. Both teams hope to ride this momentum through the regional round and into the championships, which begin on June 5 in Austin, Texas.
